Contacting legislators

Up
E-mail your rep

Gunsafe's strength is that we are a real grassroots organization. We have no figureheads (like Sarah Brady) to do our talking for us. If each Gunsafe member contacts his or her State senator and State representative about pending bills, legislators will listen.

Some guidelines:

Feel free to identify yourself as a member of Gunsafe. Mention Gunsafe's web address (www.gunsafe.org).

Stick to the facts. Be polite. Use your spell checker. Keep your letter short so that it will really be read. Try to be positive.

To learn the names of your legislators, and to find out how to contact them (including e-mail addresses): Click here to find your representative in the House; click here to find your senator.

A shortcut: A Gunsafe member has compiled a list of all legislators' current e-mail addresses.

Don't be afraid to call or write! Legislators like hearing from constituents, especially on technical issues like firearms and permits. Legislators can't be expert on every subject. They rely on comments from voters who have personal knowledge about firearm safety, self defense, etc. You may be surprised by the response you get, even if your legislator is generally anti-gun.

Go for it!
